I got a video camera at the end of 1990...
and started filming everything that our crew all got up to. We’d always be going on trips to someplace to ride. This section was from the first ever BSD video called Street Kings and was filmed in the long hot summer of ’91. Myself, Richie Mutch, Paul Robertson, Peter Lindsay and Colin Smith were on a trip to King of Concrete, after that we stayed in London for a few weeks and were joined by Roger Clark.
In those days we’d meet up with Gerry Galley and his crew and hit spots around London like Rom, Leigh on Sea Stockwell, Southbank and whatever else was going, looking back it was such a rad time, we’d just do whatever sounded good with no ties, long sunny days of riding and hanging out. We filmed this on a few different sessions at Leigh on Sea, that place was a ramp paradise and getting to ride it with Gerry, Sean Scarfe, Zach Shaw and John Dye was amazing, all of those guys were so good!
Were you happy with the overall video?
Looking back at in now it’s all edited very basically but yeah I was/am happy with it. Filming was a way of documenting what we got up to, being able to film and edit was something pretty new at that time and it was really exciting. We filmed all year up until the end of summer then I sat in my room for about a month editing the whole thing (BSD Stress Kings is a 1 hour long video). I’d edit the video section by section with a 8mm camcorder plugged directly into a VHS recorder and then put music over it.
Why do you think people really like this section and why does it stand out?
I think there’s a good mix of different types of riding, from Gerry blasting vert, to Sean Scarfe with hang 5’s and front wheel manuals and some of us just messing around with a chilled out soundtrack and a sunny summer feel.
What was the idea with the music choice??
The Orb tune Little Fluffy Clouds was something I’d heard that summer, I thought it really fitted with the vibe of the sunsets at Leigh on Sea, that was why I used it. But it wasn’t long enough for the full section, the Enigma tune was something kind of similar so I remember just using it for the rest of the section.
