Ive ridden the last 56 days straight. 50 to celebrate turning 50…Normally I try to ride every day if possible. Right now I need to force myself to take a couple days off!
Dustin Reese
Age?
Im 50yrs
Location?
Im from lancaster, ohio usa
Never stopped, New Starter or Comeback King?
Ive been riding since late 1983 without stopping. Before that i was a motocross/supercross racer from the age of 5 to 13. Most go to motorcycles after bmx but i do everything backwards lol
Bike?
I currently ride for reklamationbikes. I ride with a 19.5tt length. I prefer short bikes
Where do you ride?
I try to ride all over but most of my time is spent at my local skatepark ( miller skatepark lancaster ohio)
Do you mostly Ride Solo or in a crew? – If Solo -then are you happy with that or is to just that there’s no-one your age nearby to ride with?
It kinda alternates.. theres times I dont have anyone to ride with for a period of time and other times I do.
Lately some mid school friends Beau Campbell and Shane Neely started riding again and it been a blast! Ive also been riding with Trevor Watring more which is awesome as well. I deff prefer to ride with others over solo sessions
Whats the scene like near you?
Lots of scooters.. lol but more bmxers as of recently
Do you feel part of BMX these days or do you feel somewhat distant from BMX as a sport?
Honestly I feel more like a part of bmx than I ever have. People have really been supportive and positive
As the US is such a huge country is it hard to connect with other riders (especially now your a bit older)?
Lately ive been hooking up and riding with all kinds of riders young and old so id have to say no. Just gotta make those road trips happen.
How often do you ride?
I’ve ridden the last 56 days straight. 50 to celebrate turning 50 and the last six includes cornhuckit bmx jam in nebraska. Normally I try to ride every day if possible. Right now I need to force myself to take a couple days off! Lol
What part does social media play on your riding and motivation?
It probably plays a bigger part than it should but I love being in touch with bmxers all over the world. I love to share and motivate people to ride or even give them a good meme chuckle. I just like brightening other peoples day
What do you love about modern BMX?
The bikes. New school bikes feel so good to ride. Light weight and quick. They ride way better than the old or midschool bikes
What do you dislike about modern BMX?
I dislike that there are so many clones.. I miss the days you could recognize someone from just their style or just by what bike they rode because it looked different.
I like anyone who has their own unique style as opposed to 100 riders who ride just like one particular pro. It’s freestyle bmx, not popular style bmx. Find your own path to originality and create your style #endtheclonewars
Who do you look to for influence these days?
Robert Ridge, Trevor Watring, Montana Ricky, Brant Moore are my biggest influences right now. Guys I’ve always looked up to are Vic Murphy, Pete Augustin, Eddie Roman, Troy Mcmurray, Dave Mirra, and Brian Vowell to name a few.
Whats the story for you and injuries now that you’re an older dude?
Injuries.. ugh. I have been pretty lucky honestly. No big injurys in the past but the last couple years have been kinda rough.
Ive had hip surgery which really didnt help much. Supposed to have shoulder surgery as well but I’ve been putting it off. I ride threw the pain alot though I probably shouldn’t, but that’s the bmx drive in me. I just gotta ride regardless.
Do you always pad up?
I always wear knee/shin guard and gloves to ride.. trying to get myself to wear my helmet more now that im older but old habits die hard. Yes I know I should but just don’t always think about it when Im rolling out the door
Do you do any exercise or stretching to help with BMX fitness and/or injury prevention?
I always try to stretch out before a ride. It really does make a huge difference in flexibility and to help prevent injury
Do you sometimes struggle for motivation to get out and ride?
My biggest struggle with motivation is winter time. I ache and get stiff so bad its even hard to ride an indoor park. I cant ride at all outdoors if its under 55° outside. Body hurts to bad in the cold. Other than that if im healthy im always down to ride
What about Eating and Booze? Do you try to watch these so you can keep on riding BMX?
I eat whatever I want. I probably should watch what I eat but I gotta maintain this oldfatguy figure lol
I only drink socially here and there so thats not really an issue but I do use cannibis to help with pain and sleeping. I will not take pharmaceuticals what so ever.
What do you miss about the BMX scene of times gone by?
Bmx b.i.t.d.. thats hard to say.. since i never quit it’s always been relavent in my life. I understand why things changed because I was there. But if I had to pic it would be how bikes looked different from each other. Everything is so carbon copy now
What’s next for you?
Next for me.. more riding! And possibly a business venture with Trevor Watring in the bmx world that may happen soon, but you will have to stay tuned to find out!
Any last words?
Age is just a number. Bmx is for the people!
Id like to thank Ride On bmx for letting me do this interview.
