WHAT I RIDE #8 Steve Nowak

Steve Nowak's
Subrosa OM

21”

Why did you choose this particular frame fork set up?

The Subrosa OM frame is on the larger side(not a scooter frame) It has a 9” standover and a 5” headtube so it has a bigger feel.

The rear end is shorter than other Subrosa frames as well. That helps with wheelies (cause I suck at them). The forks are on the steeper side which helps with tech street stuff

What sort of riding does your F+F set up suit?

I try and stay as diversified as possible on what I ride. I like to be able to ride a 9ft bowl and then session a 2 ft ledge. This setup handles everything I throw at it. The only thing I don’t ride much is dirt(it’s fun just not as easy to get to)

What’s the steering set up like (ie Stem, Bar rake, Bar height etc)?

I just switched to a Matt Ray front load stem and it’s awesome. It has a 48mm reach and 8.5mm rise. I run the Matt Ray bars with 9.5” rise 12 degree backsweep and 1 degree upsweep. Classic feel. They come in 29” width but I just trimmed 3/8” off each side.

Which parts of your set up are “Old man friendly”?

I definitely have a grip of seatpost! I also run the Haro Dave Mirra tribute pivotal seat.(Thanks to Dean Druce and John Buultjens)

When Haro sent Dave the prototypes for his signature seat he gave me a red sparkle one and Mike Laird got a blue sparkle version. It was the BEST seat. So when haro released this version I knew I had to run it. Plus it pays tribute to a good friend. RIP Dave

Brand loyalty. What makes you run the brands you use?

The majority of my setup is provided by Subrosa and Shadow Conspiracy. Ronnie Bonner and the crew at Sparkys are amazing people. They LOVE BMX and their products and support they show to the BMX world reflects this. I am fortunate to call Ronnie a friend and grateful they support an old guy and keep me doing what I love.

Is there a part of your set up that’s stayed fairly consistent with over the years?

Must have rear brakes! I ran fronts brakes for 24 years and I took me a year to get used to not having them. But I will never lose the rear brakes(Abubacca’s are my go to trick)

Oh and pegs cause I like to grind.

Is there one that has changed a lot?

My seatpost is defiantly a lot lower than back in the day. The rear end is a great deal shorter as well.

How has your perfect set up changed throughout the BMX eras?

Most notable is the weight. My old Eastern bike weighed in at 44lbs. my current setup is around 25lbs. I also went from 2 brakes ,4 pegs, a Gyro and a cassette to 1 brake, 2 pegs, a straight cable and a freecoaster.

Any custom made or custom mods on your bike?

Soon after I got this frame the brake bolt snapped off up in the frame. After multiple hours trying to drill it out, I went to Mike Laird and 20 minutes later I had permanent brake mounts welded on!

Mike is amazing and my brakes have never worked better!

I trimmed the bars slightly.

I purchased some Snafu grips at Wal-Mart and used the grip lock ring on the left side of my bars to prevent the grip from sliding(just like the brake lever does on the right side)

I run a rubber motorcycle brake lever cover(keeps it comfy)
